What is EPFOHO?
The Employee’s Provident Fund Organization ( EPFO) is a social security organization that acts as a saving tool for employees.
Funds are pooled in equal amounts by both the employer and the employee into a separate account which can be availed upon retirement or switching jobs.
The Government of India has come up with a system for employees to monitor the status of their account easily. This will help them keep track of their savings and meticulously plan their expenses.
Employees can also avail a loan against their EPF balance if need be. The EPF balance could earlier be checked by giving a missed call, via the EPF app, or the EPFO portal.
A new SMS service has been implemented by the Government so that employees can check their account status without much hassle.
This initiative is not only beneficial for the employee but also acts an augment for the UAN service since it is mandatory for availing the SMS service.
How to Check EPF Balance via SMS
The short-code SMS service to access your EPF account details can only be availed if you have a UAN ( Unique Account Number).
Check with your employer about the activation of Universal Account Number (UAN).Each PF account has its own UAN.
Even if you change companies the UAN number will remain constant. Integration of your KYC details to your UAN is also a must.
Here is how you can check the status of your UAN:
Go to http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in/index.php
Enter your EPF account details and check your UAN status
After that to activate the UAN you need to collect your Member-ID details from your employer and link your account
Here is how you can proceed further:
Step 1– Send an SMS from your registered mobile number to 7738299899
Step 2– The contents of the SMS should be in the format EPFOHO UAN followed by the first three characters of the language you prefer using. If you are more comfortable with Hindi then you can use EPFOHO UAN HIN.
You can choose from the following languages:
English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali.
After you send the SMS you will receive your balance details available with EPFO along with details of KYC seeded, Last Contribution and Total PF Balance.
However if you have not provided appropriate KYC details or your employer has not provided or approved these details digitally, you will not receive your contribution details.
Things to remember when Checking EPF Balance via SMS
Make sure to send the SMS in the prescribed format to the assigned number. Sending the SMS from your registered mobile number is a must.
How to check balance via EPFO Portal
Step 1: Go to the online portal www.epfindia.gov.in
Step 2: Under ‘Our services’ got to the ‘For Employees’ tab’
Step 3: You will find ‘Member passbook’ as the first option unser ‘Services’
Step 4: Login with your UAN and Password.
Step 5: The Member IDs of all accounts linked with your UAN will be displayed once you are logged in. Your EPF accounts with both the current and previous employer can be accessed.
Step 6: Click on the Member ID of the account you want to access and your passbook will be displayed.
How to Check EPF Balance via EPFO/ Umaang app
You can download and install either the “m-sewa app of EPFO” or the Umaang app from the Google Play Store.
For the EFPO app click on ‘Member’ and then go to ‘Balance/Passbook’. The next step is to enter your UAN and registered mobile number.
Entering the correct details is important as only if your mobile number is verified against your UAN, will you be able to view your current EPF balance details.
For Umaang you need to go to the EPFO option on the homepage of the app and select ‘Employee Centric Services’. You will then be asked for your UAN.
The system will then send an OTP(One Time Password) to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP before it expires and you can access all your account details.
How to check PF Balance using missed call facility
Step 1: Give a missed call from the registered mobile number on the allocated number-011-22901406. If you haven’t completed the KYC procedure with UAN you will not be able to avail this service.
Step 2: The call will be automatically disconnected and after a short while you will receive an SMS with all your PF details.

A helpdesk service for grievance management has also been launched by EPFO for the benefit of its members. You can contact them from Monday through Sunday at toll free no. 1800118005 from 09:15 AM to 05:45 PM regarding any uncertainty or complaints relating to UAN / KYC Services.
